Professional Background
Hospitality Developer / Manager / Turnaround Specialist
MZ, a self-made multi-millionaire, has purchased or developed and managed 16 hospitality properties in New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina over the past quarter century. He also operated Pooja, an Indian restaurant in the 1990s. In 2008, he purchased and renovated Cedar Gardens, a 35,000 sf restaurant and banquet business which he continues to operate successfully. He continues to excel in business development and management, with the assistance of his brother, CZ Patel.
Turnaround Specialist
In 2008, MZ took over an aging Cedar Gardens which was reduced to a run-down bar and seldom-used banquet facility. He completely renovated the banquet hall, created a new bar and restaurant business, and installed state-of-the-art LED lighting and other features that has now made the facility a stand-out example in Hamilton for a turnaround business that also created 16 new jobs, all without any funding from government. He also created a new wine club that meets monthly. And he has created weekly opportunity for local bands to perform and gain experience and recognition for future opportunities. In 2003, MZ took over management of an ailing Comfort Inn in Lawrenceville, GA, and converted it to a Holiday Inn Express. He increased revenues from $737,338 in 2003 to $1,019,275 in 2005, a 47.5% increase. He increased the occupancy rate from 45.3% to 62.3% during the period. He sold it in 2006 with a 28% capital gain. MZ purchased a package of 5 hotels from Chemical Bank in 1990 for $3.5 million. He fixed up operations and management of all, and sold 2 of them within 3 years for $3 million. In 1999, he took over an underperforming Econo Lodge in Bordentown, NJ and turned around the financial performance, paid off all debts, and owns it free and clear currently.
Hospitality Development and Management
MZ manages all his properties with the assistance of his brother, CZ, from New Jersey. His Welcome Hospitality Group owns, develops, and manages hospitality properties. WHMCO currently owns and operates 9 properties in New Jersey and North Carolina. MZ designed, constructed and developed multiple franchise hotel concepts. His first hotel development was in 1988, which was the first-ever newly constructed Econo Lodge in New Jersey. He was also the first Econo Lodge franchisee in NJ since 1982. Since then, he has developed Comfort Inn, Bordentown (1998), Holiday Inn Express in Lawrenceville, GA (1999), Comfort Suites in Wilmington, NC (2000), and Wingate Inn in Southport, NC (2008). In 2008, MZ took over a run-down banquet hall, and converted it to a modern banquet and conference facility, added a flower shop and a pub in order to market to weddings, and modernized the liquor store.
